I might give jdownloader a second chance. I found it highly unusable the time I tried it, mainly due to the UI, it didn't make any sense. Maybe I'll try to use it as a command-line tool like youtube-dl. The other obstacle is that it requires Java, which is a bit of a concern. But yeah I'll give it a try then.

Once you get JD2 installed (both parts), basically all you ever have to do is highlight the URL of the video page, right-click the highlighted URL, and from the menu Copy the URL. JD2 usually will automatically grab the video. The downside of JD2 is that it downloads ALL resolutions of the video, which is overkill, and trying to rename the file name is a PITA. JD2 always saves to your Downloads folder (unless you know how to re-configure it), so then you have to pull out the version you want, copy to your preferred folder on your computer, then delete the downloaded content from your Downloads folder. So yes, I agree with you, it is not user friendly and not intuitive. But be sure to install both parts. (BTW, if you are not using Firefox browser, your experience could be quite different.)
Alternatively, an online download service 9xbuddy.com can download most (not all) YT, Vimeo, and porn sites with no complicated requirements. Doesn't require installing anything on your computer. Copy/paste the video URL into their search box. Pick the rez you want and just Save the video to the folder you prefer. Downside - the download can be slow sometimes, and sometimes it just can't "see" the video you want. But it's easy to use -- a very friendly option.
I don't know what you mean by "standard methods." In my mind, any downloading software or downloading online service is a "standard method." For me, screen capture is not a "standard method" and in my preferred downloading options, it's a last resort.
Of course, we all have our different preferences, sometimes based on our Operating System and primary software. In my experience, folks using Apple OS have a more challenging situation than those using Windows with Firefox browser. I have no experience with Linux, so don't know what to recommend for those folks.
Unfortunately, there is no ONE solution for every situation. And there are some videos I (and other Admins here at NOS with really expert coping experience) just cannot figure out how to download. That's when the last resort (screen capture) seems to be the only remaining option. But it really ought to be a last resort.
