Robopolice
They are named Pup(potentially unwanted programs) and they can slow performance, install spacestealing browser toolbars and sometimes invade your privacy, here is a few tips how to avoid them and download jdownloader.

Go to this page:

http://jdownloader.org/download/offline

Download here:
1_jdownloader_install
Run it on your pc:
2_install_step

Jdownloader starts downloading
3_install_step_2

Read the fine print

Always read what your are accepting, a lot of companies are tricky and sneaky trying to make you install a pup
4_Licence

The first trap
You are recommended to make a standard installation, never do that always choose custom installation
5_advanced_install

Choose where you want to install
6_advanced

Decline pup
7_decline_bing_search_engine

Disarm the next trap
Look what you get here super pc tools which you do not need so press decline
8_decline_super_pc_tools

Finalize installation

Jdownloader always did the job for me, especially it's anti captcha plugins are worth gold (I pay for most hosters i like, but those i don't Jdownloader 2 beta + plugins saves the day, anyday and all day) :)
Some people will hate it for the learning curve, but once you get to know it, you will never go back to IDM & the likes.

Yet if you absolutely despise Jdownloader, im voting IDM in 2nd place for sure.

I recommend Jdownloader 2 beta, even though it is not 100% open source.

IDM did not impress me. I am now using Jdownloader 2 beta. But I can not get it to work with Dailymotion or Pornhub. So I still must use the DownloadHelper plug in. But the free version of that inserts Qcode in HD downloads. When will we have "one downloader ti rule them all"?

Any tips on getting Jdownloader to work with Dailymotion and Pornhub? And how to download video on sites that seem to provide not downloadable link?

And question for Jdownloader expert. How to download only the highest rez video instead of all available versions? Default is to download all.

That's what IDM is for, alternatively you can use videodownloadhelper for firefox or getthemall for chrome, though IDM will work when those don't.

Settings->Plugins-> Load Best version for whichever site you want.
